Peyronie's disease
is treatable
Scar tissue in the penis can cause curvature, pain, and difficulty with intimacy. Effective treatment exists, from Xiaflex injections that break down the scar to traction therapy and surgical correction, matched to the phase of the condition.
How treatment works
Peyronie's disease begins when scar tissue, called plaque, forms in the tunica albuginea, the tough layer surrounding the erectile tissue. The plaque does not stretch the way healthy tissue does, so the penis curves toward it during erections, sometimes with pain or difficulty with intercourse.
Treatment depends on the phase. In the early, active phase the priority is controlling pain and limiting progression. Once the condition stabilizes, Xiaflex injections can break down the plaque and reduce curvature without surgery, often combined with traction therapy. For severe or complex curvature, surgical correction remains the definitive option.
Evaluation
A private exam assesses the plaque, the degree of curvature, and which phase the condition is in.
The phase matters
Active-phase disease is managed for pain and progression. Stable disease opens the full range of options.
Treatment
Xiaflex injections break down the plaque over a series of visits. Traction and surgery round out the options.
Improvement
Curvature and pain typically improve over the course of treatment, and intimacy becomes comfortable for most men.
