It explains the frequency
A bladder that starts each cycle half full reaches full absurdly fast. High PVR is why some men urinate hourly yet never feel finished.
It feeds infections and stones
Standing urine is a culture medium and a mineral bath. Recurrent UTIs or bladder stones in men usually have retention underneath.
It is the bladder's warning light
Rising residuals mean the muscle is losing its fight against obstruction. Treating the blockage, from PAE to Aquablation, protects function that does not always come back.
Common questions about PVR
What is a normal post-void residual
Under 50 mL is generally considered normal, and under 100 is often acceptable, particularly in older men. Above 100 deserves evaluation, and above 200 signals significant retention.
How is PVR measured
With a small ultrasound scanner on the lower abdomen right after you urinate, in seconds, with no catheter and no discomfort. It is part of a standard BPH evaluation.
Can an enlarged prostate cause high PVR
It is the most common cause in men over 50: the gland squeezes the urethra, the bladder cannot finish the job, and residual urine climbs. Relieving the obstruction typically brings the number down.
Does high PVR always need treatment
Not always, but it always needs an explanation and a follow-up plan. The combination of symptoms, prostate size, and the trend of the residual decides between watching and fixing.
